Your Questions About Nintendo Console History

Mark asks…

Who has made the WORST Home Video Game Controller?

I am talking from the First Generation Atari 2600 / Nintendo Entertainment System NES – All the way up to the current crop of Consoles with the Nintendo Wii, Sony P.S. 3, and Microsoft X-Box 360.

I have used all of them through out the years with the exception of the Sega Saturn, the only system that I have never played and only 1 of two systems that I have never owned, the other being a Nintendo Wii, but I have played it a few times.

I say that it is a close call, but the Nintendo 64 has the Worst Game Controller in History, with the Sega Dreamcast coming in second. Besides these two, I think most of the rest are pretty good. I think the champ is a tie between the X-Box 360′s and the PlayStation Controller layout used for all their systems. The X-Box’s is more ergonomic with the joystick up high, but the P.S. controlers especially the new PS-3′s have better button control.

So what is you vote?
HOLY SMOKES, I have never had so many responses in any other category in Answers, Gamers are diffidently on the ball!

As for the original X-Box, been a long time since I played it, but I remember it wasn’t that bad to me, but I have big hands. Yeah, the Gamecube controller is very small but it’s layout wasn’t to bad.

Mac answers:

The Atari 5200 or Philips CD-i, have some of the worst controllers ever made. (The 5200 had a numeric keypad on it for pete’s sake, as in 1-9, # and * keys)

The nintendo 64 controller is a joke, too many buttons and overall just wierd feel to them. Especially playing something like Call of Duty now, and trying to go back and play Goldeneye 007. It just doesnt feel right. Gamecube wasnt much better.

The xbox launch controller was just as huge and awkward as the Dreamcast controller. But the Dreamcast had that cute lil.. Memory card, lcd screen with minigames. :)

Definitely a fan of the 360′s layout over the PS2/PS3, just because of the stick placement and hand feel. :)

Betty asks…

What would gaming be like today?

Nintendo‘s Family Computer (Famicom for short) hit Japan in 1983, and despite some early hardware quality issues, became an instant hit. It brought near-arcade quality gaming into the home, and actually cost less than the Japanese version of the Atari 2600. After such success in its home country, Nintendo began to cast its eye abroad, imagining the potential profits that could be reaped in the West. It didn’t, however, feel confident in its ability to distribute and market its products to foreigners, and so began looking for a partner to handle the Famicom’s worldwide distribution.

Atari, meanwhile, was still the biggest name in Western video games, but was hemorrhaging cash at a tremendous rate. In an effort to keep the company afloat, Atari Chairman, Ray Kassar, scoured the world for potential business opportunities. The result of one such effort was the licensing of Nintendo‘s Donkey Kong for the Atari home computers. Remembering this transaction and impressed by Atari’s global marketing network, Nintendo President, Hiroshi Yamauchi, decided that Atari would be a suitable choice for handling the worldwide distribution of Nintendo products outside of Japan.

Even in this alternate universe Super Pitfall would have probably still sucked. Meetings were arranged, with Nintendo‘s two top executives first visiting Atari’s Sunnyvale headquarters. After answering a litany of questions from Atari executives and lawyers, the Nintendo duo headed back to Seattle. Shortly thereafter, a group from Atari visited Nintendo‘s headquarters in Kyoto, where they got their first look at the Famicom in action. Things went very well, and after much back-and-forth, a tentative agreement was reached. It was decided to sign the contracts one month later, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Chicago.

A funny (or horrifying, depending on whom you ask) thing happened at CES. Coleco was showing off its new (and ill-fated) ADAM computer system, and had decided to use Donkey Kong as the demo game. While Coleco did own the home console rights to Donkey Kong, it was Atari that had earlier secured the computer rights. Once Atari’s Ray Kassar caught wind of what was at the Coleco booth, he accused Nintendo of cheating and double-dealing behind Atari’s back. Utterly furious, he threatened to cancel the Famicom deal and sue Nintendo out of existence.

Nintendo did its best to rectify the situation, and was aghast when Kassar was ousted from Atari a month later. The contracts were still unsigned, and with Kassar seemed to go all hope of getting the Famicom marketed in the West. Atari’s corporate implosion accelerated, and soon it wasn’t able to afford the Nintendo deal anyway. Eventually, though, Nintendo decided to market the Famicom in America by itself, through its youthful American branch. The Nintendo Entertainment System finally debuted in 1985, and the rest, as they say, is history.

History that doesn’t include Atari.

Mac answers:

That’s a great point. The Famicom (NES) revolutionized the video game industry by truly starting 2-D side scrolling gaming to not only America, but the world. The Atari 2600 was a great system with a lot of fun games, and it continued to release games up until around 1992, but without Nintendo and the NES, gaming would not be where it is today. It officially revamped the industry from the video game crash of the early-mid 80′s, and now the Wii has set a new standard over 20 years later.

Daniel asks…

Should Microsoft come up with their own portable gaming device similar to the PSP(NGP) or the 3DS?

Should they? Haven’t they realized the business potential for portable gaming? Nintendo just cranked up its DS with the DS 3D and Sony just unveiled the most powerful gaming handheld in history of gaming.

Sony and Nintendo are such innovative Japanese companies and they both are doing very well with their consoles and handhelds. Microsoft on the other hand, seems to be just a “tug along” player ever since it came up with the orig Xbox almost 10 years ago and who only happens to be beating Sony by 3 million units with their Xbox 360 compared to the PS3 (Last gen, Sony beat Nintendo and Microsoft handily, selling 147 million PS2s [and counting]).

But in totality, Nintendo and Sony is winning this generation in terms of units sold:

Nintendo Wii plus DS= 84mil units and 144mil units respectively= 228 million units
Sony PlayStation 3 plus PSP= 47mil units and 65mil units respectively= 112 million units

Microsoft on the other hand failed numerous times with their android phone which is now also a hotbed for gaming. Their only product, the 360, has sold 50 million so far and that’s it (and with an astonishing 55% failure rate), no sales coming from any other gaming hardware.

So, would you Microsoft fans be happy if Microsoft comes up with their own portable gaming device that will enable you to play Halo or Gears of War (can’t think of any other possible games) on the go? Do you feel that it’s about time Microsoft totally crush these Japanese companies and totally dominate here in the Americas?

Thoughts?

Mac answers:

Yes, they should or they are going to get further left behind in the tech world. IOS and Android has even destroyed DS systems and the PSP, so yes, they need to do something, because they piece of shit windows phone with no apps won’t cut it.

Your Questions About Nintendo

Daniel asks…

What do the buttons on a Nintendo 64 controller typically represent/do?

I’m writing a story that involves a group of teens playing a Nintendo. However, I haven’t used a Nintendo in many years, and therefore do not know what the buttons do on the controller. Help is appreciated. Thanks!

Mac answers:

A and B buttons are just the normal Nintendo buttons that are on all of their consoles.
^ Different uses depending on the game.

C buttons allowed you to move the camera around in the 3-D worlds, which were relatively new to gaming, at the time.

The Z button on the back was the “trigger” button.

Shoulder buttons L and R most of the time had different purposes for each game.

Directional arrows and the analog stick were for moving around.

Start Button to pause the game or go into the game’s menu.

Most players would hold the middle of the controller with their left thumb on analog stick, left index finger on the Z button. Right thumb on the A and B buttons and the right index on the R shoulder button.

Ken asks…

Is the nintendo ds i a good deal or should i stick with my nintendo ds?

I am trying to decide whether to buy a nintendo ds i or keep my nintendo ds. What do you think I should do?

Mac answers:

It Depends on if you will use the extra stuff. And do you have a Ds Fat or DS Lite.

Reasons to stick with your Lite.

Reasons to but The DSi
Camera ( which is better then you might think)
Internet Browser
Dsiware ( like wii channel if you didnt know)
Bigger Screens
New Matte finish
Their could be games that only work on it ( unlikely tho)
Sound
Basically has a MP3 player in it
New Pictchat ( just Rainbow writing)
Dsi Shop Channel
Facebook Is coming soon.

To me this was worth it, i use my DSI everyday

So i say Buy it

Hope This Helpe You
